Where Do I Start?

There are so many things that happen when you are trying to have an app developed that it can seem a bit overwhelming at times. So, Digital8 has put together a list of things that you could have organised before you come to see us about your app.

1. Functional Elements

Create a detailed list of functionality you would like included in the application. Essentially, this includes what the app should do.

2. Non-Functional Elements

Create a list of non-functional (design or interaction ideas) you would like included. If possible provide a brand guideline as well.

3. Prioritisation

Prioritise each of these lists in order of the most important to least important functionality and non-functionality. If possible, provide Digital8 with your marketing research including:

  • Launch Date
  • Target Market
  • Marketing Plan

3. Determine a Budget

  • $2,000 – $6,000
  • $6,001 – $12,000
  • $12,001 – $20,000
  • $20,000 – $30,000
  • $30,000 – $40,000+

Functional and Non-Functional Definition

A functional requirement describes what a software system should do, while non-functional requirements place constraints on how the system will do so.

The functional requirement is describing the behaviour of the system as it relates to the system’s functionality. The non-functional requirement elaborates a performance characteristic of the system.

Examples of functional requirements include:

  • What is the customer journey? (What are the key steps a customer should make through your website?)
  • Do you need a CMS? (Will you need to edit the website content regularly?)
  • Do you need a shopping cart? (Do you have a preference, ie. PayPal or Magento?)

Examples of non-functional requirements include:

  • Legal Compliance (What guidelines will the website need to follow?)
  • Maintainability (Who will take of the website once it goes live?)
  • Security (Is your website likely to be targeted by spam?)

We hope this simple checklist helps you get started with your app development journey. However, if you’re still stuck on where to start, feel free to contact us and we’ll set up a workshop to help you through the process.
