Glossary:
- Functional and Non Functional Definition
According to LBushkin on stakeoverflow.com, a functional requirement describes what a software system should do, while non-functional requirements place constraints on how the system will do so.
The functional requirement is describing the behavior of the system as it relates to the system's functionality. The non-functional requirement elaborates a performance characteristic of the system.
Examples of function requirements are:
- What is the customer journey? (What are the key steps a customer should make through your website?)
- Do you need a CMS? (Will you need to edit the website content regularly?)
- Do you need a shopping cart? (Do you have a preference, ie. PayPal or Magento?)
Example of non-functional requirements are:
- Legal Compliance (What guidelines will the website need to follow?)
- Maintainability (Who will take of the website once it goes live?)
- Security (Is your website likely to be targeted by spam?)
